A good point about feminists
goldsquare brings up a good point: a lot of the rhetoric and recruiting material that emphasizes women's rights ignores the fact that a great many people who have "outdoor plumbing" or (how did he put it?) "pendulous gentials" are, in fact, great fighters for the rights to equal pay, medical issues, etc.

One of the reasons I avoided NOW in Michigan for so many years was that they seemed to be solely directed at Radical Lesbians -- that straight women in happy relationships with supportive males were not really feminists. That's the image I have in my head of "feminazis" -- not the families and multigenerational/multigender groups I saw at the march.

So, my question is: what do _you_ see as a feminist? Is the word itself a roadblock? How better to describe outselves?

Political: A note from Helen Hunt
Received this note from Helen Hunt (yes, the Helen Hunt, who spoke at the March) via Planned Parenthood:

Dear Pat,

I want to take a moment to ask you a very serious question.

How much do you care about the future of: a woman's right to choose, access to comprehensive sexuality education, war and
peace, affordable health care for all, a safe, clean environment, and the state of the economy?

I am sure that we all agree that these are fundamental issues in all of our lives.

That's why I am working with Planned Parenthood to make sure American women mobilize and vote on November 2nd. I invite you
to join this effort.

I have created a short video that I hope you will watch and share with your sisters, your mothers and other family members, girlfriends, and co-workers. But don't stop there. Pledge to remind five women to vote, and take at least one woman with you to the polls on November 2nd.

1. WATCH THE VIDEO: http://www.onevotefilm.com/video/wmv300.php

3. MAKE A PLEDGE: http://www.ppaction.org/campaign/GetOutAndVote/uixiwn24j8jtid

Voting together we can determine who wins and who loses elections. It is crucial that we reach voters in every community to make sure women's voices are heard - loud and clear.

Your vote is your voice. Make it heard on November 2nd.

I've sent invitations to a bunch of you who listed "pro choice" or "Feminism" on your interests and you also live in the sacramento area.

I'm hoping to spur conversations and some get-togethers, and some activities with some of the organizations around: NARAL, Planned Parenthood, NOW, etc. We can create a community that is and does what we want.

so, again, Welcome!
